How to Introduce a Sinner to Christ

Lead Them in the Sinner’s Prayer

One of the greatest privileges and responsibilities for believers to participate in is to introduce sinners to Christ. It provides an opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ's (the Good News) love, grace and truth with others, and assist them in entering into a life-changing relationship with Him. Below is a seven-step guide to help you introduce a sinner to Christ and guide them through a genuine prayer of repentance and faith.

1. Know and understand the Gospel Yourself

You cannot present the gospel to someone else until you are confident in your knowledge of it. The gospel is summarized below:

2. Build a Connection with the Person

Develop a connection with the individual, show compassion, be genuine and avoid being judgmental about the issues they struggle with, the doubts they hold, or the fears they have. Share your testimony if you feel comfortable doing so. Sharing your testimony helps the other person to see how God’s love changed your life.

“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Colossians 4:6)

3. Express the Need for a Savior

Gently communicate with the individual that all people are sinners and in need of God’s grace. Provide scripture to support the fact that all people are sinners:

Help the individual to understand that sin results in spiritual death, but God offers eternal life through Jesus.

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

4. Share the Good News, Communicate the Hope Found in Jesus Christ

Share with the individual the hope of Jesus Christ. Emphasize the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross, His resurrection, and His promise of forgiveness.

Scripture:

5. Invite Them to Make a Decision

Salvation requires a personal decision to rely on and trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Ask the individual if they want to accept Jesus Christ into their life. If the individual is hesitant, provide continued prayer and guidance without pressure.

“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.” (Revelation 3:20)

6. Lead Them in the Sinner’s Prayer

When the individual is ready, lead them through a prayer of repentance and faith. The specific words used are less important than the sincerity of the individual’s heart. A simple example of a sinner’s prayer could be:

“Heavenly Father, I confess that I am a sinner and have fallen short of Your glory. I believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for my sins and rose from the dead to give me eternal life. I repent of my sins and ask for Your forgiveness. I invite Jesus into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Thank You for saving me and making me a new creation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

7. Encourage Them in Their New Faith

Once the prayer has been prayed, assure the individual of their salvation based on God’s promises. Encourage them to develop their faith by:

To introduce someone to Christ is a powerful blessing. Prayerfully, patiently, and lovingly walk with them through this journey and allow the Holy Spirit to work in their heart. Remember that your role is to plant or water the seed, however, it is God who causes the seed to grow (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). Rejoice with heaven as they make the most significant decision of their life.
